Hotel Explosion Attorneys
At approximately 2 p.m. on Monday, May 19th, 14 construction workers were injured in an explosion while working on a high-rise Hilton hotel near Petco Park in San Diego. The explosion is being blamed on a natural gas leak in the fifth floor utility room of the 32 story Hilton hotel which was scheduled to open in December 2008.
A total of 14 construction workers were taken to two area hospitals, most were treated and released with cuts, scrapes and minor burns. Three of the injured workers were placed in medically induced comas for burns covering up to 35 percent of their bodies. These three workers are listed in critical condition and it is unknown at this time if they will survive.
Witnesses recalled hearing the blast for miles throughout the downtown San Diego area. Several people recalled feeling the ground tremor, similar to that of an earthquake.
It is unknown by investigators at this time what ignited the gas leak. The overall structure of the hotel was not compromised but four floors were severely damaged.
Thousands of construction workers are injured and even killed on construction sites each year in the United States. When these accidents occur on construction sites, often times a lack of proper safety guidelines are to blame. The architects, owners, insurance companies, equipment manufactures, general contractors and subcontractors have a responsibility to their workers to provide a safe worksite and warn of the potential dangers associated with the job site.
A serious injury to a construction worker can be career ending if the worker is no longer able to perform the strenuous tasks his or her job once demanded. Tradesman and skilled laborers often find it impossible to obtain employment with the equivalent pay and benefits.
