Passenger Killed Friday in I-8 Crash Near Willows Road in Alpine

JULY 31, 2009 - The California Highway Patrol is investigating an accident involving a 1999 Chevrolet Cavalier and a box truck  that killed a 70-year-old National City man on Interstate 8 in Alpine, authorities said. Dennis Conrad Wolf was a passenger in the Chevrolet Cavalier driven by his wife, a 73-year-old National City woman. They were traveling east on I-8 about 12:45 p.m. when the driver attempted to pass a box truck near the off-ramp for Viejas Casino, authorities said. The truck clipped the car’s rear bumper, causing the woman to lose control of the car and tumble 50 feet down an embankment near Willows Road, according to the CHP. Wolf died at the scene. His wife was flown to a hospital complaining of back and neck pain. The driver of the truck, a San Diego man, was not injured. The CHP is investigating the I-8 car accident.


Motorcyclist Severely Injured Friday in Carlsbad

JULY 31, 2009 - A motorcyclist was injured in a crash on Interstate 5 in San Diego County, authorities said. The accident happened in southbound lanes around noon, according to the California Highway Patrol. Details of the I-5 accident were unavailable, but witnesses said the victim was lying unconscious in left lanes, authorities said. The accident occurred near the Poinsettia Lane off-ramp and within 10 minutes traffic was backed up to Palomar Airport Road. Investigators requested a blood technician be assigned to the crash, suggesting they believed alcohol or drugs were involved. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the motorcycle crash.

Man Struck by Car Thursday Night While Crossing I-5 in Oceanside

JULY 31, 2009 - A man was airlifted to the hospital after he was struck and injured while attempting to cross Interstate 5, authorities said. The accident happened about 9:50 p.m. in the southbound lanes just north of Mission Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol. The victim was struck in one of the right-hand lanes, but managed to get to his feet and run to the center divider area, authorities said. A witness reported that the man had a badly broken leg. The CHP is investigating the I-5 pedestrian accident.

Marine Injured Friday Morning in Motorcycle Crash on Interstate 5 Near Camp Pendleton

JULY 31, 2009 – A marine suffered serious injuries Friday morning in a motorcycle accident on I-5 Friday morning, fire officials reported. The marine, who was not identified, was riding his motorcycle northbound on Interstate Five when he collided with another vehicle, near the Harbor Drive Exit. The collision was reported at about 6:20 a.m. The motorcyclist, who authorities said was likely on his way to Camp Pendleton, was flown to Scripps La Jolla by helicopter, with a possible fractured arm and other injuries. The cause of the Oceanside motorcycle accident remains under investigation.

Widow Awarded Nearly $2 Million in Vista Golf Cart Accident

JULY 28, 2009 - A jury awarded nearly $2 million to a woman whose husband was killed when his golf cart plunged down a steep rocky hillside at a San Diego County golf resort, authorities said. Edwin Payne, 65, was halfway through a round of golf when he lost control of the golf cart in May 2007 and plummeted down an 80-foot cliff, according to the attorney for the plaintiff. Payne was ejected onto the southbound lane of Old Highway 395. Pala Mesa Resort was found negligent by a North San Diego County jury last week, and the Payne’s widow was awarded $483,426 in economic damages and $1.5 million for non-economic damages. The jury found that Payne was 30 percent to blame for the golf cart accident and the resort 70 percent liable.

Suspected Drunk Driver Seriously Injured in Car Accident Early Tuesday in Escondido

JULY 28, 2009 - A 24-year-old Escondido man was injured when his speeding BMW crashed on Interstate 15, authorities said. The unidentified driver was traveling south on I-15 at a high rate of speed north of Highway 78 when he lost control and crashed into the center median about 2:45 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. The car then veered across all lanes and overturned several times, ejecting the driver, authorities said. The victim was transported to Palomar Medical Center with serious injuries. Alcohol is believed to have played a role in the crash, but the CHP is continuing its investigation into the I-15 car accident.

Mechanic Seriously Burned Tuesday at Oceanside Pep Boys

JULY 28, 2009 - A shop foreman suffered serious burns when a radiator hose burst at a North San Diego County garage, authorities said. The accident happened shortly before 11 a.m. in the 2041 block of Mission Avenue, according to the Oceanside Fire Department. The employee, estimated to be in his 30s, was inspecting the car when the hose burst, spraying hot coolant from his abdomen to his knees, authorities said. The victim was estimated to have second-degree burns over 10-percent of his body. The man was airlifted to UCSD Medical Center’s burn unit and listed in stable condition, authorities said. The Division of Occupational Safety and Health is investigating the scalding injury.

Girl Struck by Trolley and Killed Sunday in Chula Vista

JULY 27, 2009 - A 4-year-old girl riding on a bicycle with her father was killed when they were struck by a San Diego trolley, authorities said. Veronica Ramirez of Chula Vista died while trying to cross the tracks with her father. They were riding west on L Street, just west of Industrial Boulevard, when the accident occurred, according to Chula Vista police. The girl was in a child seat but was not wearing a helmet when the collision occurred about 6:30 p.m., authorities said. Witnesses told police that the father entered the intersection after the automatic arms that prevent vehicles from crossing the tracks had been lowered, authorities said. The father and daughter were thrown about 40 feet down the tracks after the collision, authorities said. The girl was pronounced dead about 30 minutes after the accident at Rady Children’s Hospital in Kearny Mesa, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner. The 34-year-old father was being treated at a San Diego Hospital for a broken hip and possible internal injuries, police said. The Metropolitan Transit System, which operates the trolley line, is investigating the trolley accident.

Father and Daughter Injured Sunday When Personal Watercrafts Collide in Mission Bay

JULY 27, 2009 - A 33-year-old Escondido man and his 11-year-old daughter were seriously injured when their personal watercraft collided with another, authorities said. The accident occurred about 10:45 a.m. in the Fiesta Bay area near Ski Beach, according to San Diego police. The family had been picnicking in Mission Bay Park when the collision occurred, authorities said. The man suffered a back injury and was bleeding, while the girl complained of leg and arm pain, officials said. They were both hospitalized. The other rider was uninjured. The watercraft accident was among eight boat rescues, 202 medical calls and 196 water rescues at San Diego City beaches on Sunday, when approximately 290,000 people flocked to the shore, authorities said. The San Diego Police Department is investigating the watercraft accident.

Bicyclist Injured Saturday While Trying to Avoid Car in Pacific Beach

JULY 27, 2009 - A 23-year-old man was hospitalized with severe head injuries following a bicycle crash, authorities said. The unidentified man was riding south on Soledad Road shortly before noon when the accident occurred near Kate Sessions Memorial Park, according to San Diego police. According to witnesses, a car traveling north on Soledad Road turned left at Alta Vista Way in front of the bicyclist, authorities said. The victim braked to avoid a collision, causing him to crash, police said. The car did not stop. The San Diego Police Department’s traffic division is investigating the bicycle accident.
