APRIL 30, 2009 - A woman in Escondido has sued a medical supply company that manufactures surgical screws after suffering post-operative problems. Doctors implanted a Calaxo screw in Cheryl Dailey’s knee after a skiing accident in 2007. After the surgery, the screw became dislodged from her bone, causing Ms. Dailey a great deal of pain not only in her knee, but also her neck, back and shoulder. This required two additional surgeries and treatment to improve her mobility. Ms. Dailey sued Smith & Nephew Inc., the manufacturer and distributor of the Calaxo screw. Similar situations have been reported nationwide, leading the company to recall the screw due to problems such as premature material degradation and fluid build-up.
APRIL 29, 2009 - A man is dead after colliding with a trash truck yesterday in the Oak Park area. 36-year-old Jose Ismeal Lerma was exiting eastbound State Route 94 at Federal Boulevard when his SUV hit a patch of spilled oil on the roadway. Mr. Lerma lost control of his vehicle and crossed into the path of an oncoming EDCO truck. The two vehicles collided nearly head-on. Mr. Lerma was transported to Scripps Mercy Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
APRIL 29, 2009 - A man has died from his injuries sustained earlier this month when an elderly motorist crashed into his dental office. On April 15th, the unidentified 59-year-old man was visiting the office on Tierrasanta Boulevard when an 86-year-old woman lost control of her vehicle and drove into the lobby of the building. The man was pinned against a wall, suffering numerous fractures and organ damage. He was transported to Sharp Memorial Hospital, where he went into cardiopulmonary arrest two days later. Machines kept the victim alive until he succumbed to his injuries yesterday evening.
APRIL 27, 2009 - The driver in a crash that killed a bicyclist earlier this year has pleaded not guilty. On January 6th, 55-year-old Arthur Newman was traveling on Sabre Springs Parkway when he drifted into the bicycle lane and struck Walter Joller, 55, as he rode his bicycle. Although the victim was wearing reflective clothing and flashing lights, Mr. Newman told authorities that he failed to see him. On Friday, Mr. Newman pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter. He was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash.
APRIL 27, 2009 - An alleged drunk driver injured himself and two others in a head-on collision in Jamacha last night. The unidentified driver, a 38-year-old man, was traveling eastbound on San Vicente Street when he crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with a westbound vehicle. The man was transported to the hospital with possible internal injuries. The occupants of the other car, two women ages 41 and 58, were transported to the hospital with neck injuries and a fractured foot.
APRIL 27, 2009 - A man was killed in a single-vehicle crash at Camp Pendleton on Saturday. 27-year-old Louis Andres Mendoza was traveling north on Interstate 5 when his vehicle veered off the roadway and struck a tree just before Basilone Road. Witnesses stopped to assist the victim, but emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene.
APRIL 25, 2009– A teenager was struck by a tow truck in Encanto, in southeast San Diego Friday night, authorities have reported. The boy, whose name was not released, was estimated to be between 12 and 14 years old. Police did not immediately disclose the extent of the boy’s injuries. The pedestrian accident occurred at about 7:30 p.m. on Madera Street near 69th Street. Police are investigating the cause of the Encanto pedestrian accident.

APRIL 24, 2009 - A worker was killed after his ATV rolled down a hill in Fallbrook on Wednesday. 49-year-old Benjamin Lobato Huante, an entomologist with S&S Grove Management Services, was setting insect traps at a farm on Conquistador Road on Wednesday morning. Mr. Huante rode his ATV too close to a cliff, sending the vehicle tumbling approximately 120 feet down a hillside. He died at the scene of multiple blunt force injuries. Cal/OSHA is investigating the accident.
APRIL 22, 2009 - A woman was injured in a single-vehicle crash in Rainbow yesterday. 52-year-old Susan Jacobson was traveling south on Interstate 15 when her SUV struck the center guardrail. This caused the vehicle to veer across the roadway and crash into a tree on the right shoulder near Rainbow Valley Boulevard. The SUV then rolled approximately 40 feet down an embankment. Emergency responders had to cut Ms. Jacobson from the wreckage. She was flown to Palomar Medical Center with fractures to her neck, ribs and face.
APRIL 22, 2009 - A teenager died after falling from a hotel balcony yesterday. 16-year-old William Schrenkeisen was seen jumping from the 12th floor of the Sheraton Harbor Island yesterday afternoon. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
