Woman Killed & Husband Injured in Auto Accident

FEBRUARY 26, 2009 - One woman was killed and her husband was injured after an auto accident in southeast San Diego County yesterday. The unidentified 63-year-old woman was driving eastbound on Interstate 8 when her Honda Civic was struck by a Pontiac near Buckman Springs Road. The Civic rolled down an embankment off the south side of the Freeway. The driver was thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene. Her husband was a passenger in the car and was transported to the hospital with serious injuries. It has not been determined as to why the driver of the Pontiac, 50-year-old Linda Cahill, swerved out of her lane and struck the Civic next to her. Witnesses stated that she had been driving recklessly prior the collision. Ms. Cahill was not injured.

Man Killed on Escondido Blvd May Be At Fault

FEBRUARY 25, 2009 - The wheelchair-bound man who was killed on February 12th may be at fault. Evidence shows that 52-year-old John David Byrd was traveling in the middle of a southbound lane on Escondido Boulevard when he was struck by a car. He died at the scene of head and torso injuries. The driver, David Greeno, was neither speeding or under the influence of alcohol. There is no sidewalk at the point of the collision, but pedestrians are permitted to use the shoulder of the Boulevard.

Scaffolding Company Found Responsible in Walkway Collapse

FEBRUARY 25, 2009 - After a five-month investigation, Cal-OSHA has determined that Paramount Scaffolding is responsible for the deadly walkway collapse on August 28th. The wooden walkway cover that collapsed was intended to protect pedestrians from construction being performed on the Studio 15 apartment complex at the intersection of Imperial Avenue and 15th Street. The report found that the scaffolding company stacked scaffolding planks and metal frames against the walkway cover on the day of the collapse. A crane operator warned the crews that the pressure was bowing the walkway cover. No one responded to the warning, and the collapse occurred approximately 30 minutes later. Fourteen people were injured and one man, Tyrone Allen, recently died from his injuries. Mr. Allen’s family had previously sued Paramount Scaffolding as well as Studio 15 Housing Partners and Allgire General Contractor Inc. for negligence. They are now amending their lawsuit to a wrongful death claim. The scaffolding company will be fined $10,120 for violations of state safety regulations.

Pedestrian Injured After Being Struck By Vehicle

FEBRUARY 24, 2009 - A pedestrian was injured after being struck by a car in Otay Mesa yesterday. The unidentified 33-year-old man was walking on Heritage Road when he was hit by a car whose driver had lost control. The pedestrian was pinned between the driver’s car and a parked vehicle, crushing his legs. He was transported to the hospital with severe injuries. The driver, a 42-year-old man, had been traveling northbound when he swerved to avoid another vehicle near Otay Mesa Road. He then struck a catering truck and several trees before he hit the pedestrian.

Motorcyclist Injured After Colliding With Truck

FEBRUARY 24, 2009- A motorcyclist was injured after colliding with a truck in Logan Heights on Sunday. The 20-year-old unidentified man was traveling westbound when his motorcycle struck a truck at the intersection of National Avenue and 31st Street. The man was pinned underneath the truck and had to be removed by firefighters. He was then transported to the hospital with a compound leg fracture and back injuries.

Boy Killed in ATV Accident in National City

FEBRUARY 23, 2009 - A young boy was killed in an ATV accident in National City on Saturday. 12-year-old Julio C. Lizarraga was riding his all-terrain vehicle on W. 16th Street when he lost control of the vehicle. The ATV then struck a wall. The boy was transported to the hospital where he later died of blunt force injuries.

Driver Killed in Auto Accident in Temecula

FEBRUARY 23, 2009– - One person is dead and another injured after an auto accident in Temecula yesterday. 18-year-old Spencer Davis Bolt and his passenger, 19-year-old Lindsay Lockery, were traveling southbound on North General Kearney Road when they struck a bridge abutment. The vehicle became airborne, eventually landing in a dry riverbed at Santa Gertrudis Creek. Mr. Bolt was killed in the accident. He was not wearing a seat belt. Ms. Lockery was transported to Inland Regional Medical Center, where she is in stable condition. Mr. Bolt was speeding at the time of the accident.

Detective Killed in Motorcycle Accident in Dulzura

FEBRUARY 23, 2009 - A detective for the San Diego Police Department was killed in a motorcycle accident on Friday in Dulzura. 49-year-old Larry W. Steward was riding his motorcycle eastbound on State Route 94 when another vehicle swerved into his path from the eastbound lanes. The vehicles collided head-on, and Mr. Steward was thrown from his motorcycle. He suffered blunt impact injuries to his torso and lower left extremities. He was flown to UCSD Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. The other driver, 77-year-old Jose De Jesus Garcia-Gomez, was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter.

Bicyclist Killed in Escondido on Sunday

FEBRUARY 23, 2009 - A bicyclist is dead after being struck by a car in Escondido yesterday. The unidentified man, a 29-year-old transient, was struck by a vehicle at the intersection of South Centre City Parkway and Escondido Boulevard. The victim was unconscious when paramedics arrived and had suffered major head and torso injuries. He was declared dead at the scene. It is believed that the man intentionally rode his bicycle into oncoming traffic. He was not wearing a helmet.

Three Injured in Helicopter Emergency Landing

FEBRUARY 19, 2009 - Three people were injured when a helicopter made an emergency landing in San Onofre last night. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection Helicopter took off from Long Beach Airport and was on its way to San Diego’s Brown Field when it experienced engine trouble. The pilot performed an emergency landing on San Onofre State Beach, near the nuclear power plant. All three occupants were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
