Escondido Child Molestation Suspect Caught, Severely Injured, After High Speed Chase

NOVEMBER 15, 2008 — Gary Cervantes, 42, of Escondido, led police and California Highway Patrol in a high speed chase in rush hour traffic across San Diego county Friday afternoon. Cervantes was wanted on four counts of child molestation, and fled authorities after they tried to pull him over for a traffic violation.  The chase began near Rancho Bernardo on southbound I-15 at about 4:40 p.m. Police tried to pull over Cervantes, who was driving a green Honda minivan. Cervantes drove west on SR-52, then north on I-5, driving in the carpool lane and weaving between cars to bypass much of the congested commuter traffic.   Cervantes stopped the minivan in the far left lane at about 5:15 p.m. on I-5, near Manchester Avenue. He climbed the center divider and began running northbound next to the center divider of southbound I-5, with CHP officers following closely behind on foot. One car missed Cervantes, but he was then struck by a white sedan in the next lane. He was arrested and taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital for treatment of a broken leg and other major, possibly life-threatening injuries.
