The South Bay Freeway was jammed and snarled for hours on Wednesday, September 3, 2008, when a Porsche 944 travelling at speeds near 120 mph crashed into a big rig tractor-trailer on I-805.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the fatal accident occured right about 8 a.m. on I-805 Southbound in Chula Vista, near the Palm Avenue Exit. Authorities reported that the Porsche burst into flames and the driver died at the scene. The driver of the truck, who is 28 years old, was not injured, according to a CHP officer.
Two motorcyclists were killed on Route 74 on August 29th and 30th. 66-year-old Jerrald Jarvis was traveling on part of Route 74 referred to as Idyllwild National Forest Highway on August 29th when he struck a delivery truck at mile marker 57.7. Mr. Jarvis was thrown from his motorcycle and then hit by an SUV. He later died at Hemet Valley Medical Center. The next day, 38-year-old George Miller lost control of his motorcycle at mile marker 56.6. Mr. Miller’s motorcycle then collided with a minivan. He died at the scene ten minutes later.
A motorcyclist was killed in an accident on September 3rd in Lake Elsinore. 23-year-old Christopher Michael Snethen was traveling westbound on Route 74 when he lost control of his motorcycle on a curve. Mr. Snethen then crossed into oncoming traffic into the path of a Freightliner flatbed truck. The truck driver was unable to avoid the motorcycle. Mr. Snethen was killed in the collision.
The family of a man who died in the Staten Island Ferry crash has won a wrongful death lawsuit. 44-year-old John Healy was killed when the ferry operator struck the concrete pier in 2003, killing ten others and injuring many. His family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the City of New York and was recently awarded $8.75 million. There were a total of 172 claims against the City due to the ferry crash. $45 million has been awarded so far, with 44 cases yet to be settled.

A man was killed in an accident in North County on September 1st. 21-year-old Horacio Gomez was speeding on Route 76 when he struck two vehicles. He then lost control of his Nissan, striking an embankment and flipping. Mr. Gomez was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene.
An elderly man was seriously injured in an accident on September 2nd. The 87-year-old man was crossing El Cajon Boulevard in a wheelchair when he was struck by a vehicle at the intersection ofMississippi Street. He was transported to the hospital with head injuries and a fractured leg. The driver claimed he did not see the man in the roadway.
A man is suing Ford Motor Co. after he was injured in an accident last October in
Arizona. 31-year-old Luis Pena, a U.S. Border Patrol officer, was responding to a narcotics call when his pickup truck began to drift to the right on Federal Route 20. When Mr. Pena tried to straighten the vehicle’s direction, the truck turned sideways and flipped. The roof of the F250 pickup came down on Mr. Pena and trapped him. He is now a quadriplegic. He is suing Ford Motor Co. for the defective and dangerous vehicle. Mr. Pena’s lawyers believe that Ford designed an unstable vehicle and did not inform the public of its known problems.
