Cancer patient awarded $9million in Bad Faith Insurance Claim

A cancer patient who was undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer and had her medical insurance canceled was awarded $9 million.

The patient, Patsy Bates, took on Health Net Inc., one of California’s largest health insurers, in a bad faith insurance lawsuit after her plan was abruptly canceled, leaving her with over $129,000 in medical bills and no coverage as she battled cancer.

The arbitration judge, Sam Cianchetti, ordered Health Net, Inc. to pay Bates’ outstanding medical bills plus $8.4 million in punitive damages and $750,000 for emotional distress.
