What to do if you have an automobile accident

Many people wonder what to do if they get in a auto accident. Most important is the personal safety of you and any passengers involved. If possible, you should move your car out of the road to avoid any other accidents with other cars passing by. Turn on your emergency lights to warn other vehicles. If you notice oil or gas leaking from the car, get as far away as you safely can. If you have flares, set them to warn others. If you or anyone else is injured, immediately call 911. If you are unable to, have someone else do it for you. If you or someone else is badly bleeding, it is important to do whatever you can to stop the bleeding. Injured people should not be moved if at all possible, as that can worsen their condition. If you’ve been involved in an auto accident, this is not a time to try and be brave. Let emergency personel take care of you and allow the ambulance to take you to the hospital if need be. The faster  you are treated for your injuries, the quicker your recovery time will be. It’s important to remember not to admit the accident was your fault. Even if you feel the blame is yours, the accident investigation could prove otherwise. If possible, get as much information as you can about the accident including the accident location, date, time, description of the other car (including license plates), registered owner information, driver information, police officer information, occupants of the other car information, witnesses (if any) and a diagram of the accident. The accident should immediately be reported to the police, as California law requires the driver to do so. Also you need to notify your insurance company in order to protect your rights.
