Man In Wheelchair Run Over By Driver Talking on Cell Phone Tuesday in East Village

OCTOBER 14, 2009 – A man in a wheelchair was seriously injured Tuesday evening when he was struck by a vehicle at an East Village intersection. The intersection accident occurred just before 5 p.m. at Ninth Avenue and E Street, San Diego police said. According to witnesses, the driver of the sedan that hit the man was talking on his cell phone when he struck another vehicle and then the man in the wheelchair, knocking him out of the chair and running over him. The driver’s cell phone was confiscated so police could determine what time a call was received or made. The victim, who was not identified, was taken to the trauma center at UCSD with serious injuries. The East Village pedestrian accident remains under investigation.

San Diego Woman Killed Thursday Morning in City Heights Intersection Crash

OCTOBER 9, 2009 – A San Diego woman was killed early Thursday morning in a crash at a City Heights intersection, San Diego Police reported. The fatal crash occurred around 6 a.m. at Fairmont Avenue and El Cajon Boulevard. According to reports, the woman, 40, whose identity was not released, was travelling north on Fairmont Avenue when, for unknown reasons, she ran the light at El Cajon Boulevard. Her Toyota Corolla collided with a Mercury Marquis heading east. The driver of the Mercury Marquis, a 20-year-old woman, though not deemed at fault, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. The driver of the Corolla was taken to the hospital where she died of her injuries. Police are investigating the cause of the crash.

Four People Killed Friday Night in Fiery Intersection Crash in Santee

AUGUST 29, 2009 – Four people were killed Friday evening in a crash in Santee, the California Highway Patrol has reported. The crash occurred on State Route 125 near Mission Gorge Road, north of La Mesa. According to the CHP, a person called 911 at 6:36 p.m. and reported having a stuck accelerator and was unable to stop at an approaching intersection near Mission Gorge Road. The car was estimated to be travelling at more than 100 mph when the crash occurred. The vehicle caught fire and all four occupants died at the scene. The cause of the fatal Santee crash is under investigation.

Skateboarder Injured in Collision With SUV Sunday Night in Encinitas

AUGUST 17, 2009 - A young skateboarder was hospitalized after he was struck by a sports-utility vehicle at a San Diego County intersection, authorities said. Witnesses told investigators the skateboarder was riding east on Encinitas Boulevard about 11 p.m. when he reached the intersection with six-lane El Camino Real, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department. He entered the intersection at the end of a green light for eastbound traffic, but it turned red before he could get through the northbound lanes of El Camino Real. A truck in northbound lanes waited for the victim to cross, but an SUV in an adjacent lane did not see the youth and he was struck with the left-front fender, authorities said. The impact hurled the boy into the intersection. He was transported to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla for treatment of unspecified injuries. The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the pedestrian accident.

Five Injured Saturday Afternoon in Mira Mesa Crash

AUGUST 8, 2009 – Police reported five people were injured, one seriously, in a two car collision involving a 2001 Ford Escort and a 1998 Toyota Sienna minivan in Mira Mesa. The crash happened around 3:30 p.m. According to reports, the man driving the Ford Escort ran a red light and turned into a shopping center near Reagan Road at the same time a woman was driving west on Mira Mesa Boulevard. Both the driver of the Escort and the driver of the Sienna were injured, authorities said. Three other passengers were also injured. One person reportedly suffered a spinal fracture. Police are investigating the cause of the crash, and whether the driver of the Ford Escort was possibly under the influence of alcohol.

Drivers Injured Wednesday in Carlsbad Collision Involving FedEx Delivery Truck

AUGUST 5, 2009 - A driver who suffered a medical emergency caused two collisions in North San Diego County, injuring himself and the driver of a delivery truck, authorities said. The first accident occurred shortly before 5:30 p.m. near the intersection of Palomar Airport Road and El Fuerte Street. That crash involved a FedEx delivery truck, according to Carlsbad police. Moments later, the driver hit another car near El Camino Real. One vehicle was knocked on its side by the impact. The injured drivers were transported by ambulances to Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside and Palomar Medical Center in Escondido, authorities said. The Carlsbad Police Department is investigating the collisions. Investigators do not believe alcohol or drugs played a role.

Man and Dog Struck and Killed by Car in Rancho Bernardo Saturday Morning

AUGUST 1, 2009 – Police reported a 79-year-old man and a dog were struck and killed Saturday morning in Rancho Bernardo. The pedestrian accident occurred just before 10 a.m. on Rancho Bernardo Road near Via Del Campo. The man, who was not identified, and one of his dogs were both killed. One other dog survived. Police are investigating the cause of the Rancho Bernardo pedestrian fatality accident.

Bicyclist Killed in Collision with Vehicle Tuesday Morning in Valley Center

JULY 21, 2009 - A bicyclist died from injuries suffered in a collision with a car, authorities said. The unidentified cyclist was struck near the intersection of Cole Grade Road and Bernabeo Court around 8:20 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. Emergency personnel responded and transported the victim to Palomar Medical Center, said a dispatcher with Cal Fire. A short time later, an investigator with the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office was called to collect the cyclist’s body, authorities said. The CHP is investigating the bicycle collision.

Woman Critically Injured in Collision Wednesday in Fallbrook

JULY 16, 2009 - A 59-year-old woman was severely injured when her compact car collided with another vehicle at an intersection and overturned, authorities said. The victim was driving a 1993 Ford Festiva north on South Mission Road in San Diego County at about 11:22 a.m., when a 2007 Toyota Camry turned onto Mission from Green Canyon Road, according to the California Highway Patrol. The driver of the Festiva swerved to avoid the Camry but they still made contact, causing the Ford to overturn, authorities said. Kazuko Kobryn, the driver of the Camry, was taken to Fallbrook Hospital with minor injuries. The unidentified driver of the Festiva was transported to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido, where she was treated for multiple injuries, including bruising of the brain, authorities said. The CHP is continuing its investigation of the car collision.

Woman On Disability Scooter Struck by Car Wednesday in Mission Valley

JULY 9, 2009 – According to police, a 68-year-old woman from Missouri was struck by a Ford Mustang while crossing the street on a disability scooter in Mission Valley. The woman, who was not identified, suffered a broken leg in the pedestrian accident. The accident happened at the crosswalk of Camino de la Reina under Instate 8 on Hotel Circle. The driver of the Ford Mustang, a 25-year-old man, was reportedly looking for a freeway entrance and did not see the woman on her scooter. Police are investigating.
