Qualcomm Stadium Employee Died Tuesday after Fall From Press Box Before Chargers Game

OCTOBER 20, 2009 – A Qualcomm Stadium employee died Tuesday morning after falling out of a press box at Qualcomm Stadium before the Chargers / Broncos Game Monday night. Walter Daniels, 66, of Spring Valley, fell approximately 30 feet from an upper level press box onto the loge level. He was taken by ambulance to Sharp Memorial Hospital where he died early Tuesday morning. An investigation is ongoing; an official cause of death has not been released.

Pedestrian Struck by Car Wednesday Night in San Diego

AUGUST 13, 2009 - A man suffered major head injuries when he was struck by a vehicle while walking on a Clairemont street, authorities said. The unidentified man, described as in his 40s, was hit about 9:30 p.m. while walking on Mount Alifan Drive near Balboa Avenue, according to San Diego police. The man was thrown an estimated 30 feet and suffered major head trauma. He was transported to Sharp Memorial Hospital in Kearny Mesa in critical condition, police said. The driver remained at the scene and it’s unclear if he will face charges. The San Diego Police Department is investigating the pedestrian accident.

Deputy Hospitalized Following ATV Collision Sunday in Imperial Beach

AUGUST 10, 2009 - A San Diego County Sheriff’s deputy suffered a head injury when his four-wheeled all-terrain vehicle collided with a colleague’s ATV while on beach patrol, authorities said. The collision occurred about 11:35 a.m. while the deputies were traveling north on Seacoast Drive near Elder Avenue, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department. One deputy apparently stopped his ATV and the other ran into the back of it, authorities said. The impact knocked the trailing deputy off his vehicle and he suffered injuries to his head and right arm, officials said. The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the ATV collision.

Marine Seriously Injured when Vehicle Slammed into Building Monday in Vista

AUGUST 4, 2009 - The California Highway Patrol is investigating a solo-vehicle accident that seriously injured a Marine, authorities said. The victim, described as being a man in his 30s, lost control while driving a Jeep Liberty sports-utility vehicle on Highway 78 about 11:30 a.m., according to the CHP. The SUV left the highway and crashed into a vacant Tweeter electronics store at 1950 Hacienda Drive. The unidentified driver suffered serious head injuries and was transported to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido, authorities said.

Hit-and-Run Accident Seriously Injured Man Monday Night in San Diego

AUGUST 4, 2009 - A 66-year-old man suffered major head and neck trauma after he was struck by a car while crossing a street in City Heights, authorities said. The unidentified man was attempting to cross Fairmount Avenue at Myrtle Street when he was struck by a Honda about 9:16 p.m., according to San Diego police. The victim was apparently in a marked crosswalk when he was hit by the southbound vehicle, authorities said. The car, which had tinted windows and neon lighting on the undercarriage, was located about 5 ½ hours later at the intersection of Poppy Place and 40th Street, which is about a mile from the accident site, police said. The San Diego Police Department is investigating the pedestrian accident.

Teenage Boy Struck by Watercraft While Riding Inner Tube Sunday in Mission Bay

AUGUST 3, 2009 - A 14-year-old boy was knocked unconscious when he was struck by a personal watercraft while being pulled on an inner tube off San Diego, authorities said. The unidentified boy was hospitalized with neck and back injuries and a possible broken leg, according to a San Diego lifeguard. The collision occurred about 4:15 p.m. in an area reserved for skiing near De Anza Cove, authorities said. The accident left the boy floating face down in the water before he was rescued and regained consciousness. It was one of 11 boat rescues by San Diego lifeguards on Sunday. They also performed 55 water rescues and 133 medical aids. The San Diego Police Department is investigating the Mission Bay collision.

Bicyclist Injured Saturday While Trying to Avoid Car in Pacific Beach

JULY 27, 2009 - A 23-year-old man was hospitalized with severe head injuries following a bicycle crash, authorities said. The unidentified man was riding south on Soledad Road shortly before noon when the accident occurred near Kate Sessions Memorial Park, according to San Diego police. According to witnesses, a car traveling north on Soledad Road turned left at Alta Vista Way in front of the bicyclist, authorities said. The victim braked to avoid a collision, causing him to crash, police said. The car did not stop. The San Diego Police Department’s traffic division is investigating the bicycle accident.

Boy Struck by Van While Riding Scooter Saturday in San Marcos

JULY 26, 2009 - A 12-year-old boy was seriously injured when he was struck by a van while riding a scooter, authorities said. The boy was with two friends on bicycles about 7:45 p.m., according to San Diego County Sheriff’s officials. The bicyclists rode ahead of the boy and through a stop sign at Palomarcos Avenue while traveling south on Pommel Way, officials said. The driver of a minivan noticed the bicyclists, but did not notice the trailing boy on the scooter and they collided, officials said. The victim was transported to Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego and treated for serious head and leg injuries, sheriff’s officials said. The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the scooter collision.

Woman Critically Injured in Collision Wednesday in Fallbrook

JULY 16, 2009 - A 59-year-old woman was severely injured when her compact car collided with another vehicle at an intersection and overturned, authorities said. The victim was driving a 1993 Ford Festiva north on South Mission Road in San Diego County at about 11:22 a.m., when a 2007 Toyota Camry turned onto Mission from Green Canyon Road, according to the California Highway Patrol. The driver of the Festiva swerved to avoid the Camry but they still made contact, causing the Ford to overturn, authorities said. Kazuko Kobryn, the driver of the Camry, was taken to Fallbrook Hospital with minor injuries. The unidentified driver of the Festiva was transported to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido, where she was treated for multiple injuries, including bruising of the brain, authorities said. The CHP is continuing its investigation of the car collision.

San Diego Police Ask Public For Help in Investigation of UCSD Scientist Head Injury Mystery

JULY 14, 2009 – Over the weekend local news outlets ran stories asking the public for clues about how a man was very seriously injured on July 4 in Ocean Beach. San Diego Police are trying to determine how Christopher Bowd, a 44-year-old assistant research scientist from UCSD, suffered a severe head injury on July 4 that left him in unconscious and in a coma. Ten days later, Bowd still remains in a coma in stable condition.

Here’s what we know: Christopher Bowd was found unconscious in Ocean Beach in the 1800 block of Bacon Street around 11 p.m. on July 4. Police interviewed people nearby, but nobody seemed to be able to explain how Bowd was injured. According to reports, officers looked around the area for “evidence of a crime scene but found none.” No witnesses could explain the injury, either.

Bowd is an assistant research scientist in the Department of Ophthalmology at UCSD’s Hamilton Glaucoma Center. He received his doctorate from Washington State University in 1998.
