Two people were killed and five injured in an accident in Otay Mesa on September 28th. 35-year-old Cristie Jennings was traveling westbound on Otay Mesa Road with her passengers, 22-year-old Leticia Lamp-Randolf, a 6-year-old girl and 2-year-old boy. For unknown reasons, Ms. Jennings’ car drifted across the center divider and into the eastbound lanes of Otay Mesa Road. The vehicle was then struck by a minivan, which caught on fire. Both Ms. Jennings and Ms. Lamp-Randolf died at the scene. The children were transported by helicopter to Rady Children’s Hospital with serious injuries. Other drivers stopped to help the occupants of the minivan, a man and woman, both 38, and an 11-year-old girl. All three were transported to the hospital.
SEPTEMBER 10, 2008 - A 6-year-old boy was hospitalized for serious injuries Wednesday evening after he was hit by a car in the City Heights neighborhood of San Diego. Police reported that the child was being chased by his 10-year-old brother when he darted into the street and was hit by a Honda on 44th street near Landis Street. The driver of the Honda that hit the child was an 18 year old man. The accident occurred shortly before 7 p.m, and police reported the child fractured his right thigh bone.
Four people were injured after an accident in Oceanside on August 17th. A car was preparing to turn north onto Guajome Lake Road from Mission Avenue when it was struck by a pickup truck that ran a red light. The truck struck the car at a speed of 55-60 mph. Two of the car’s passengers were children, who were flown to Rady Children’s Hospital. Two adults were transported to La Jolla’s Scripps Memorial Hospital.
An arrest has been made in the death of an El Cajon boy. 3-year-old Zachary Foster was visiting his grandparents in Fruitland Park, Fla. when a car drove up on to the front lawn where the boy was playing. Zachary was struck by the vehicle and pushed against a parked car. His father attempted to revive him while waiting for emergency responders, but Zachary later died at a Leesburg hospital. The driver was arrested shortly after the accident on suspicion of leaving the scene of a fatal accident, vehicular homicide, and driving without a license.
The Medical Examiner has altered his account concerning the August 5th death of a child in Oceanside. 5-year-old Cheyenne Kouba of Las Vegas was visiting her grandfather on
South Pacific Street in when she was found dead at the bottom of the complex’s stairwell. Investigators initially believed Cheyenne fell 15 feet from a walkway. However, they now think that the child actually fell from a window. It is believed that she may have pressed against a screen, pushing it out of the frame. Cheyenne then fell 30 feet out of the open window. Her mother had called the police when she was unable to find the girl, then noticed her at the bottom of the stairs. Cheyenne was transported to Rady Children’s Hospital where she was pronounced dead due to head and neck injuries.
A child was injured after an accident on August 7th in Vista. The 8-year-old boy was riding a bicycle at the intersection of E East Drive and East Indian Rock Road when he was struck by a vehicle. He was thrown on to the car’s windshield, where he remained for approximately 35 feet before falling off. The driver continued to drive, stopping only to remove the bicycle that was stuck under the vehicle. The victim was flown to the hospital with a broken leg and a lacerated elbow.
The president of a swimming pool company is charged after the death of a 6-year-old boy in
Connecticut. The child, Zachary Cohn, drowned in 2007 when his arm became trapped in an intake valve in his family’s pool. The president of Shoreline Pools, David Lionetti, has been charged with second-degree manslaughter because his company failed to install safety devices when they built the pool for the Cohn family. Mr. Lionetti could receive up to 10 years in prison if he is found guilty. Since 1985, there have been 48 deaths cases similar to Zachary Cohn’s, and over 100 serious injuries.
On Friday, a 2-year-old boy was critically injured after falling from a second-story window of his home in Lakeside, California. The accident happened around 6 pm on Gold Bar Way, which is near Route 67. The mother of the child informed officers that the 2 year old climbed up on to an area near the open window, pushed on the screen and fall to the ground (a twelve foot fall). The toddler was taken by ambulence to Rady Children’s Hostpital.
