Nearly Two Dozen People Hospitalized Friday from Carbon Monoxide Poisoning at Coronado Church

JUNE 12, 2009 – Twenty-two people, including 17 children, were taken to local hospitals Friday morning after they fell ill at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The children and five adults fell ill during morning mass, just after 9 a.m. According to the Coronado Fire Chief, all 22 people are expected to be okay.

According to reports, two children fainted several minutes into morning mass. The church was evacuated and children who were not ill were escorted across the street to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church School. Authorities reported air quality readings indicated higher than normal levels of carbon monoxide. Investigators are working to determine the source of the problem.
