JULY 7, 2009 – This morning police arrested Sukru Safa Cinar, 23, of Turkey, in connection with a pedicab accident in downtown San Diego on Sunday, July 5, that fatally injured a passenger.

According to the San Diego County Medial Examiner, Sharon Miller, 60, of Illinois, had been visiting San Diego for an education conference. She, along with another woman took a pedicab on July 4 at about 11:40 a.m. to Seaport Village. The pedicab driver drove  Miller and her friend on Martin Luther King Promenade towards Seaport Village, on a pedestrian only path that prohibits bicycles and pedicabs. The pedicab did not have seatbelts, as required by law.

For reasons not known, Cinar swerved the pedicab in a “serpentine” motion, causing Miller to fall out of the vehicle and strike her head. She was taken to UCSD medical center, where physicians diagnosed her with a closed head injury. The next day, she was pronounced brain dead.

Cinar, who faces a felony charge of involuntary manslaughter, was taken into custody on Island Avenue near 14th Street Tuesday morning. Police are still investigating.
