JUNE 21, 2009 – A 41-year-old man was seriously injured when he was struck by an out-of-control car as he worked alongside Highway 125, authorities said. The victim was a subcontractor for Caltrans who was loading a message-board trailer onto his truck about 2:25 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. A 22-year-old man driving a 2002 Ford Ranger south near Grossmont College Drive lost control after the tread separated from his truck’s left-rear tire, authorities said. He crashed into the sign trailer and the left side of the truck, knocking the subcontractor 30 feet into some bushes alongside the highway. The worker suffered internal injuries and numerous broken bones, officials said, and was transported by ambulance to a local hospital. The pickup driver was cited for driving without a license and his vehicle was impounded, the CHP said. Officials do not believe drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident. The CHP is continuing its investigation.
