JUNE 12, 2009 – San Diego County sheriff’s officials said Thursday that a 45-year-old man found dead just east of Moonlight Beach died from injuries in a diving accident. The man was drinking with a friend Tuesday night in the Cottonwood Creek bed near South Coast Highway 101 and B street, when he decided to dive into a shallow pond. He struck his head on the bottom, authorities said, but was able to crawl out of the water and later went to sleep. When his friend awoke Wednesday morning, he found his companion dead.
