JUNE 7, 2009 – A 38-year-old San Pedro woman died and her 7-year-old passenger suffered major chest injuries when their vehicle left the roadway and overturned, authorities said. The accident occurred west of Calexico as the pair were traveling east on Highway 98 about 11:20 a.m., the California Highway Patrol reported. As the driver approached a sweeping left-hand turn west of Drew Road, authorities said she failed to complete the curve in the 2009 Nissan Versa and drove off the south edge of the highway. The vehicle drove over a dirt berm and became airborne, landing in an alfalfa field and then overturning. The car came to rest on its roof, with the unrestrained driver partially ejected through the back window and pinned underneath the rear portion of the vehicle. The child was also unrestrained, authorities said, and she was found by rescuers inside the rear portion of the vehicle. The CHP is investigating the cause of the crash.
