DECEMBER 2, 2008 – Four San Diego Sheriff’s deputies and one firefighter were taken to a hospital Tuesday afternoon after swimming pool chemicals and chlorine exploded behind a building in Santee. Injuries were minor and included respiratory irritation and eye burning. Traffic was stopped for some time along Mission Gorge Road after the accident happened around 12:35 p.m. Hazardous materials crews responded to clean up the chemicals, and a four-block stretch of Mission Gorge Road was closed for the cleanup and investigation. About a dozen businesses were forced to be evacuated.
